By now you have all heard that Rasmussen said in a WSJ op-ed piece that Reagan values still prevail. I heard Hannity today saying this proves what Reagan said "Government is not the solution to the problem it is the problem." Here's the problem . . . both liberal democrats and conservative republicans would agree with that statement as it stands. The libs will say "The present government is the problem and we need to fix that with better (in the sense of "more") government." The conservative will say, and what Reagan meant of course, is "The government is too big and we need to reduce it; everytime government gets its sticky paws on social or fiscal policy it mucks things up." (Okay Reagan would not have said just those words, but you know what I mean.) I don't know the exact wording of Rasmussen's poll question but I do question that the country is (as all conservative republicans want to convince themselves) still center right. It's center left . . . and drifting left. So . . . we have to do a better job of explaining to people why that's not good--why they don't want to go there. Let's stop explaining away what is so obvious from this election--not just Obama's win but the democrat wins in the Congress--we have to get our message RIGHT (pun intended), make it clear, and make it often. I think the "mythical" independents can be persuaded by a clear and well made conservative message but republicans have been tacking left (i.e. the bailout; etc.) and they need to really get back to Reagan's message and stop making excuses! WE did this to ourselves. Get back to basics!
